How to Ship Your Pet to Hawaii

Through the excitement of relocating your family to Hawaii you stare down at your furry four legged friend and she looks back up at you wagging her tail. How could you forget; and you begin planning what life will be like taking her for a stroll around the beach. But before you can continue those pleasant thoughts you must first start preparing for your furry family member’s trip to Hawaii. Not to worry, as this article will let you know how to ship your pet to Hawaii and all the preparations involved. You and your pet will soon be enjoying Hawaii together.

Preparing Your Pet for the Trip

Before shipping your pet to Hawaii you should first make sure that they are in good enough health to do so. Reconsider shipping old, new born, sick, or animals with health problems; shipping them may cause more problems for your pet. Take them to the veterinarian to make sure your pet is healthy enough for travel.

In order to enter Hawaii, pets must be at least 10 months old and will be required to stay in quarantine for up to 120 days. Or you can follow the very strict guidelines for the 5 day or less quarantine program.

Because your pet will most likely travel by air, you should crate train them for a more comfortable ride. Ask your vet what you can do to make the trip as pleasant as possible so your pet can avoid anxiety.

In order for your pet to qualify for entry into Hawaii, you will need to forward all the required documents to the proper Hawaiian channels. Only then will your pet be cleared for entry, as Hawaii has very strict rules and regulations regarding pet import. Hawaii is a rabies free area and in order to keep it that way officials heavily regulate the types of animals allowed entry. Below is a list of the documents required in order for you to ship your pet.

  • Send original health certificate to the Rabies Quarantine Branch before the arrival of your pet; must provide this upon arrival at the Airport Animal Quarantine Holding Facility as well. Failure to do so will prevent your pet from being released.
  • Completed dog and cat import form AQS-278
  • 2 original rabies vaccination certificates with actual signature in ink from veterinarian
  • Must pay all fees

It is very important that you follow all requirements for the import of your pet. If you fail to provide the necessary documents your pet will be held in quarantine until you provide them, at the owner’s expense. So if you want to make sure your pet is able to join you as quickly as possible, make certain all their paperwork and health is in order beforehand.
